WASHINGTON, March 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The leader of the
nation's largest veterans organization says he is "deeply disappointed
and concerned" after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a
proposal to force private
insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans
who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries. The Obama
administration recently revealed a plan to require private insurance
carriers to reimburse the
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in such cases.
"It became apparent during our discussion today that the President
intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan," said Commander
David K. Rehbein of The American Legion. "He says he is looking to
generate $540-million by this method, but refused to hear arguments
about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be
compromised by it."
The Commander, clearly angered as he emerged from the session
said, "This reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate '
to care for him who shall have borne the battle' given that the
United States government
sent members of the armed forces into harm's way, and not private
insurance companies. I say again that The American Legion does not and
will not support any plan that seeks to bill a veteran for treatment of
a service connected disability at the very agency that was created to
treat the unique need of America's veterans!"
Commander Rehbein was among a group of senior officials from
veterans service organizations joining the President, White House Chief
of Staff Rahm Emmanuel,
Secretary of Veterans Affairs
Eric Shinseki and
Steven Kosiak, the overseer of defense spending at the
Office of Management and
Budget (OMB). The group's early afternoon conversation at The
White House was precipitated by a letter of protest presented to the
President earlier this month. The letter, co-signed by Commander Rehbein
and the heads of ten colleague organizations, read, in part,
" There is simply no logical explanation
for billing a veteran's personal insurance for care that the VA has a
responsibility to provide. While we understand the fiscal difficulties
this country faces right now, placing the burden of those fiscal
problems on the men and women who have already sacrificed a great deal
for this country is unconscionable."
Commander Rehbein reiterated points made last week in testimony to
both House and Senate
Veterans' Affairs Committees. It was stated then that The
American Legion believes that the reimbursement plan would be
inconsistent with the mandate that VA treat service-connected injuries
and disabilities given that the United States government sends members
of the armed forces into harm's way, and not private insurance
companies. The proposed requirement for these companies to reimburse the
VA would not only be unfair, says the Legion, but would have an adverse
impact on service-connected disabled veterans and their families. The
Legion argues that, depending on the severity of the medical conditions
involved, maximum
insurance coverage limits could be reached through treatment of
the veteran's condition alone. That would leave the rest of the family
without health care
benefits. The Legion also points out that many
health insurance
companies require deductibles to be paid before any benefits are
covered. Additionally, the Legion is concerned that private
insurance premiums
would be elevated to cover service-connected disabled veterans and their
families, especially if the veterans are self-employed or employed in
small businesses unable to negotiate more favorable across-the-board
insurance policy pricing. The American Legion also believes that some
employers, especially small businesses, would be reluctant to hire
veterans with service-connected disabilities due to the negative impact
their employment might have on obtaining and financing company health
care benefits.
"I got the distinct impression that the
only hope of this plan not being enacted," said Commander Rehbein,
***"is
for an alternative plan to be developed that would generate the
desired $540-million in revenue. The American
Legion has long advocated for Medicare reimbursement to VA for the
treatment of veterans. This, we believe, would more easily meet the
President's financial goal. We will present that idea in an
anticipated conference call with
White House Chief of
Staff Rahm Emmanuel in the near future.
"I only hope the administration will really listen to us then.
This matter has far more serious ramifications than the President is
imagining," concluded the Commander.

Pelosi: Administration Will
Not Force Veterans to Use Private Insurance to Pay for
Treatment of Combat-Related Injuries
Washington, D.C. –
Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced this afternoon that the
Obama Administration would not proceed with a proposal
that could have forced veterans to use their private
insurance to pay for the treatment of combat-related
injuries.
Pelosi made the
announcement at a meeting she and House Democrats hosted
this afternoon in the Capitol with leaders of veterans’
service organizations, who greeted the news with a
standing ovation. Below are the Speaker’s remarks.
“Good afternoon and thank you all very much for
coming. Thank you for your leadership, for your service
to our country, for your generosity of spirit to
America’s heroes, for helping us make better policy to
honor the service and sacrifice of our men and women in
uniform, both when they are in active duty and when they
come home. As you know, in the military, the expression
is: ‘On the battlefield, we leave no soldier behind.’
And when they come home, working with you, we will leave
no veteran behind.
“Particular to today’s meeting and a subject of
some conversation, I’m pleased to announce that we
have some good news. Over the past several days,
President Obama has listened to the
genuine concerns expressed by veterans’ leaders and
veterans’ service organizations regarding the option
of billing service connected to veterans’ insurance
companies.
“Based on the respect that President Obama has for
our nation’s veterans and the principled concerns
expressed by veterans’ leaders, the President has made
the decision that the combat-wounded veterans should not
be billed through their insurance policies for
combat-related injuries. [Applause.]
“I want to thank all of you, our friends came to
me from the American Legion and many of you expressed
your views on this subject. You had a great champion, of
course, in Chet Edwards, who is Chairman of the
Appropriations Subcommittee on veterans; the Chairman of
the Veterans Affairs Committee, Bob Filner; the Chairman
of the Armed Services Committee, Mr. Skelton, who is
here; and the man who writes the budget, and he was
never going to put this in the budget, I know, John
Spratt.
“I want to thank them and you for making this
important change. But it wasn’t just the Chairmen
inside the Congress, it was our Members as well. Mr.
Brad Ellsworth is here, John Hall, Tim Walz, Jim
Marshall, Glenn Nye, Vic Snyder; they and so many other
Members, Gene Taylor. They — and many members of the
Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs Committees and Mr.
Edwards, Appropriations Committee on Veterans Issues —
worked hard to make this clear so that this issue is now
behind us.
“We have important work to do. Because of you, we
have been able to have the biggest increases in
veterans’ benefits in the history of the VA. We did
that a couple years ago as soon as we took the
majority. And last year, we even did one better and
now, working together under the leadership of President
Obama, in the budget we have even more dramatic
increases to meet the needs of America’s heroes.
“So thank you all for the role that you are
playing in this, and we look forward to this discussion
today. Thank you all very much for joining us.”

Updated Update from Craig Roberts American Legion
Media director
Hey Bill,
I got this from The White House about 30 seconds ago...
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 18, 2009
Statement from Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on the
President's Strong
Commitment to America's Veterans:
The President has consistently stated that he is
committed to working
with veterans on the details of the 2010 VA Budget
Proposal. The
President demonstrated his deep commitment to veterans
by proposing the
largest increase in the VA budget in 30 years and
calling VSO and MSO
leaders into the White House for an unprecedented
meeting to discuss
various aspects of the budget proposal. In considering
the third party
billing issue, the administration was seeking to
maximize the resources
available for veterans; however, the President listened
to concerns
raised by the VSOs that this might, under certain
circumstances, affect
veterans and their families' ability to access health
care. Therefore,
the President has instructed that its consideration be
dropped. The
President wants to continue a constructive partnership
with the VSOs and
MSOs and is grateful to those VSOs and MSOs who have
worked in good
faith with him on the budget proposal.

The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem
The
pledge of allegiance should be rendered by
standing at attention, facing the flag,
and saluting.
When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should
stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the
salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the
flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.

|
My Fellow
Veterans---lets see the hand salute to the
flag when ever possible--It is a new law now that permits a hand salute when NOT
in uniform. I salute EVERY US FLAG that is in front of me!!!! If I pass a
store window where the owner has thought enough to display the flag, I respect
that honor he has bestowed upon the public by saluting as I pass by. Please do
the same. Nothing twists my knickers more than to see a guy wearing a "KOREA 53"
or "VIET VET" hat walk past a flag without saluting!!!! Wouldn't you????

We just have to include this one,....considering that the country is about to

Here is one for old sailors to tell at the next VFW meeting,....
Subject: Brass
balls
CANNON BALLS !!! DID YOU KNOW THIS?
It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon
on old war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck
was the problem. The best storage method devised was to stack them as
a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting
on nine, which rested on sixteen.
Thus, a
supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area
right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent
the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.
The solution
was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for
reasons unknown, a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the
iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting
problem was to make them of brass - hence, Brass Monkeys.
Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than
iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the
brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come
right off the monkey.
Thus,
it was
quite literally,
cold enough to
freeze
the balls off a
brass
monkey.
And all this time, you
thought that was just a vulgar
expression, didn't you? You must send this fabulous bit of historical
knowledge to at least a few friends.
The "difference" in yesterday's Democrats and those we have today. Read about ol
Harry, then read the following article on Pelosi
HARRY TRUMAN --after his term in office.
Harry Truman after the presidency:
TRUE PATRIOT of the American people
Harry Truman, from Missouri, was a different kind of President. He probably
made as many important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of
the other 42 Presidents. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on
what he did after he left the White House.
Historians have written the only asset he had when he died was the house
he
lived in, which was in Independence Missouri . On top of that, his wife
inherited the house from her Mother.
When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S Army pension
reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying
for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance'
and,
later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.
After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to
Missouri by themselves. There were no Secret Service following them.
When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating,
'You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that
doesn't
belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale.'
Even later, on May 6, 1971 , when Congress was preparing to award him the
Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, 'I
don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any
award, Congressional or otherwise.'
He never owned his own home and as president he paid for all of his own
travel expenses and food.
Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the
Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have
found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their
offices. Political offices are now for sale.
Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, 'My choices early in
life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And
to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference.'
PELOSI
A True Politician of our times
Madame Pelosi wasn't
happy with the small private jet that comes with the Speaker's job, no, Madame
Pelosi was aggravated that this little jet had to stop to refuel, so she
ordered a Big Fat 200 seat jet that could get her back to California without
stopping! She is the first Speaker of the House to EVER in the history of our
country have a jet of this type to use!
Many, many legislators walked by and grinned with glee as Joe
informed everyone that's Nancy 's Big Fat Jet costs us, the hard working
American tax payers, thousands of gallons of fuel every week. Since she only
works 3 days a week, this gas guzzling jet gets fueled and she flies home to
California , cost to the taxpayers of about $60,000, one way!
As Joe put it, 'Unfortunately we have to pay to bring her back on Monday
night.' Cost to us another $60,000. Folks, that is $480,000 per month and that
is an annual cost to taxpayers of $5,760,000. No wonder she complains
about the cost of this war, it might cramp her style and she is styling, on my
back and yours.
I think of the military families in this country doing without and this woman,
who heads up the most do-nothing Congress in the history of this country,
keeps fueling that jet while doing nothing.
Madame Pelosi wants you and I to conserve our carbon footprint. She wants us
to buy smaller cars and Obama wants us to get a bicycle pump and air up our
tires. These people are nuts, if you agree pass this on, if not don't cry fowl
when you can't afford to pay your taxes.
Nancy must think that Vets have a very short memory. Prior to being chosen SPOH,
Ms. Pelosi sent a letter to all the veterans in California in her district.
(Yes) it was just prior to election and her seat ( no pun) was up for grabs. She
turned to the vets for votes. What best way to get California veterans to cross
over and vote? Yes--HR 303 was a hot ticket then. Ms Pelosi sent a letter to all
vets announcing THAT THE VERY FIRST PART OF HER AGENDA WOULD BE TO GET HR303
PASSED WITHOUT THE TEN YEAR PHASE- IN. We haven't heard from Nancy since. The
letter is posted on archives of wesupportthevets.com
