John Lovell is top gun at Subway sandwich shop..!

Plantation, Florida: Last week police were called to investigate an attempted armed robbery: The 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a Plantation, Florida, Subway shop late Wednesday, killing one and critically wounding the other, is described as John Lovell, a former helicopter pilot for two presidents. He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, and he works out every day. Mr.. Lovell was a man of action Wednesday night.
- According to Plantation police, two masked gunmen came into the Subway at 1949 N. Pine Rd. just after 11 p.m. There was a lone diner, Mr. Lovell, who was finishing his meal. After robbing the cashier, the two men attempted to shove Mr. Lovell into a bathroom and rob him as well. They got his money, but then Mr. Lovell pulled his handgun and opened fire. He shot one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other in the head.
- When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop, K-9 Units found the other in the bushes of a nearby business. They also found cash strewn around the front of the sandwich shop according to Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department..
- Both men were taken to the Broward General Medical Center , where one, Donicio Arrindell, 22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale is in critical but stable condition.
- A longtime friend of Lovell was not surprised to hear what happened. The friend said, ''He'd give you the shirt off his back, but he'd be mad as hell if someone tried to take the shirt off his back.''
- Mr. Lovell was a pilot in the Marine Corps, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He later worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta Airlines.
- He is not expected to be charged authorities said. ''He was in fear for his life,'' Detective Rettig said, "These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70's have military backgrounds and aren't intimidated by idiots."
- Something tells me this old Marine wasn't 'in fear for his life', even though his life was definitely at risk. The only thing he could be charged with is participating in an unfair fight. One 71- year young Marine against two punks. Two head shots and one center body mass shot... Outstanding shooting! That'll teach them not to get between a Marine and his meal.
- Florida law allows eligible citizens to carry a concealed weapon. Don't you just love a story with a happy ending?

UPDATE APRIL 25,2010 ONLY McCABE remains without a hearing. Two acquitted and one (McCabe) to go. Thank you America for not letting this slip under the table on the news channels.
UPDATE MAY 13,2010 This is from Military.com. Good ending to a story that never should have come about.
For the first time in more than seven months, he will throw himself into the job that he loves. Instead of reliving what happened one night in Iraq last September, hours after he took an alleged Iraqi terrorist into custody, the 24-year-old commando will concentrate on preparing for future missions.
McCabe's future with the SEALs was in doubt before a jury acquitted him Thursday on charges of assaulting a detainee and lying about it to investigators.
Last month, two other members of SEAL Team 10, Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas and Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Keefe, were acquitted on related charges at courts-martial in Iraq.
"We're all going to move on with our careers," McCabe said after the verdict. "It's all over and done with. ... I can't wait to actually focus on work."
The cases against the three SEALs were based on statements from Ahmed Hashim Abed and Petty Officer 3rd Class Kevin Demartino, the Navy master-at-arms charged with guarding him for a few hours after his capture.
Abed didn't appear in person, but his testimony was recorded and played back for the seven-member jury. He was far from a sympathetic character. In addition to his alleged involvement in the murder of four Blackwater contractors in Fallujah in 2004, McCabe's lawyers said Iraqis knew Abed as "The Finisher." He was reputed to have the decapitated bodies of his victims delivered to their families' doorsteps.
Defense lawyers continually reminded jurors of the alleged victim's background.
"We're here because a mass murderer, a vile person cloaked in a human body, said 'I was beaten,'" Haytham Faraj told the jury during closing arguments.
Questions about Abed's treatment arose shortly before he was transferred to Iraqi custody, when the SEAL detachment commander noticed blood on Abed's clothes.
He called a meeting of all the personnel who'd been in contact with Abed to ask them what happened. A day or two later, Demartino came forward, saying he'd seen McCabe punch Abed while Huertas and Keefe watched.
The matter was investigated, and made its way up the chain of command. When the three SEALs chose not to have the matter handled administratively, Army Maj. Gen. C.T. Cleveland, head of Special Operations Command Central, decided to proceed to courts-martial.
His decision sparked an outcry: More than 100,000 people signed online petitions asking the charges be dropped. Politicians said they were outraged; commentators seized on the cases as evidence of political correctness run amok in the military.
Many people pointed out that terrorist training manuals instruct followers to allege mistreatment, and McCabe's lawyers entered excerpts from the so-called Manchester Manual into evidence to make that point.
Just as crucial to the case were a half-dozen witnesses, many of them SEALs, who contradicted Demartino's version of events.
Faraj and fellow defense attorney Neal Puckett said the acquittals prove the military justice system works. And though in the past both have been critical of Cleveland's decision to court-martial the SEALs, the attorneys were more philosophical after the victory.
"No terrorist organization can claim that the American military didn't press forward and really investigate," Faraj said.
Added Puckett: "Maybe the specter of Abu Ghraib is dissipating a little bit."
Cleveland defended his handling of the matter, saying detainee abuse has "strategic implications" for the military and national security.
"Despite the opinion of some of those who preferred that these charges not proceed, I allowed these charges to go forward because I truly believe that the best process known for uncovering the truth, when the facts are contested, is that process which is found in our adversarial justice system," Cleveland said in a statement.
"I will continue to take allegations such as this seriously. ... I look forward to Huertas, McCabe and Keefe returning to their team and continuing their duties in defending our great nation."
Wesupportthevets.com comment; We think it will be awhile before another ARMY Maj. General decides to discipline a SEAL.
WHY?
WHY McCABE? WHY SEALS?

As of March 4,2010 over 150,000 American patriots have signed petitions and sent thousands of requests to the Navy Department for the EXONERATION of these duty bound UNITED STATES SERVICEMEN.
Every veteran that reads our site here should call their Congressman's office and register their concern for these brave men that have served with honor. It is incredible that this has even reached to the point that these men are being tried by Court Martial!!!

The lady in the picture is
the mother of an American that was ambushed in Fallujah , Iraq . Her son was
murdered. His body was dragged around in the streets of the city, then
burned and hung from the upper trusses of a bridge. The murderers gathered to
celebrate and have their photos taken with the trophy.
The young sailor in the picture is one of the
Navy SEAL's that later captured the leader of the band of terrorist
butchers and brought him to justice.
If the story ended there, it would still be an
acceptable feel-good, good-guys-win story. Unfortunately, that's not the case -
this Navy SEAL is facing criminal charges.
Because, somewhere along the timeline of his
capture, the terrorist murderer suffered a school-yard fat lip, his captors are
now being charged with nothing short of war crimes and facing discharge and
imprisonment![]()
So, instead of celebration of justice served and
heroes honored, these photos record betrayal, compounded mourning and the
effects of a corrupting sickness.
From WAVY.com <http://wavy.com/>
: SEALs assault case goes to court NORFOLK, Va. - "It's been very stressful,"
said Navy SEAL Mathew McCabe, 24, moments after his arraignment in military
court at Naval Station Norfolk Monday on charges that he allegedly mistreated an
Iraqi detainee.
The mother of slain Blackwater guard Jerry Zovko
drove from Ohio to give each of the accused SEALs a blessed rosary and lend
them her support. "These young SEALs are in this situation because they caught
the mastermind behind the death of my son, and not only my son and his
co-workers but also the marines who went into Fallujah after their death," said
Donna Zovko. "I am very proud of these young SEALs and thankful to them. They
did not do anything wrong." May I ramble a bit? Think out loud, so to speak? I'm
trying to make some sense of this. What title can I give to the mentality of a
people that send their best to defend the whole and then betray them?
To what shall I attribute the attitude of a people that habitually prosecute
their heroes while defending their enemies? What creates a culture that allows
people to vilify and isolate their most noble and deify their most corrupt?
I perceive more symptoms of a sickness, a
corruption of the nation's heart and soul. I am tempted to label it 'liberalism'
or 'progressivism', but those too are just symptoms of the infection. But this
is nothing new, I recognized these symptoms four decades ago in the shameful
treatment of our warriors returning from Vietnam, in the acceptance of Marines
bombed in Beirut, in the ho-hum yawn of media coverage of Mogadishu (Black Hawk
Down), in the return to mental numbness after 9/11, prosecution of the Marines
of Hadith, assault of recruiters across the country, anti-war protesters at the
gates of Walter Reed Army Hospital......
This sickness, this infection has gone untreated
for far too long. Americans are a tolerant bunch. We've patiently waited for the
ingrates among us to grow up and develop a sense of pride and awe in the
greatness of America . It's not happening.
I'm tired of waiting. I'm fresh out of
tolerance. There comes a time when the treatment for an infection cannot be
postponed any longer, lest the patient die. Through history how many nations
have habitually betrayed their defenders and survived?
Donna and I left our home at 4:00am, Monday
morning and drove to Norfolk .... We were in the company of four other
patriots from the Raleigh area: Don Gray of Military Appreciation Day and NC
Gathering of Eagles. Patrick Holbrook, NC Gathering of Eagles.

MARCH 15,2010 UPDATE;
![]()
Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas is one of three SEALs accused in the controversial case, which has led to protests and calls from members of Congress for the charges to be dropped.
Huertas faces court martial for dereliction of duty, impeding an investigation and making a false official statement. A member of SEAL Team 10 at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, he was one of the commandos who captured Ahmed Hashim Abed in Fallujah in early September. A sailor guarding the detainee claimed to see one SEAL punch Abed while Huertas and a third SEAL watched.
Four other SEALs and a Navy corpsman who were present on the day of the alleged incident, including the detachment commander, dispute the guard's claims. Because they'd been told they also faced prosecution, they requested immunity before testifying in the case. Army Maj. Gen. C.T. Cleveland, the head of Special Operations Command Central, denied their requests in February.
The military judge hearing the case against Huertas, Cmdr. Tierney Carlos, said Friday that the witnesses would offer testimony shedding doubt on the guard's allegations. Not granting them immunity, he ruled, is either an attempt to gain tactical advantage over the defense or showed the government was overreaching.
Carlos gave Cleveland until March 24 to provide immunity to the witnesses or he will abate the proceeding -- a legal term for postponing it indefinitely.
wesupportthevets.com is watching this case closely---as is all America. It is in
the news recently that Navy and Army recruiters are being flooded with legal
responsibility questions. Can you blame a person for asking if they are going to
be in a court marital for following orders? What intelligent young person would
sign on the line knowing that what has happened to McCabe and Huertas could
happen to them if just ONE piece of Islamic crap wanted to claim abuse? (Abuse?
like harm? a sad day in American Military
justice when a prisoner that has been killing your shipmates and fellow
fighters ---and in this case the prisoner is one that not only killed one of
ours--they hung their bodies on a bridge and set them on fire!!!--is able to
claim his "rights" were abused???? Hello America--where are we going here????

HONOR FLIGHT NETWORK: Honor Flight Network (HFN) recognizes American veterans for their sacrifices and achievements by flying them at no cost to Washington, D.C. to see memorials built in their honor. Many of these veterans have no other way to see “their” memorial and time is of the essence as more than 1,000 World War II veterans die each day. Veterans are flown on a "first-come, first-served basis. Top priority (for which applications are currently being accepted) is given to World War II and terminally ill veterans from all wars. Second priority is to Korean War veterans and then Vietnam War veterans. In order for HFN to achieve this goal, guardians fly with the veterans on every flight providing assistance and helping veterans have a safe, memorable and rewarding experience. Veterans need only bring money if they plan to buy souvenirs. Guardians do pay a fee depending on transportation costs from their location. A normal ratio is 8 veterans to 3 guardians. The program is equipped to handle veterans in wheelchairs and/or on Oxygen. If you know of someone who is a World War II veteran or a veteran with a terminal illness, fill out an application available at www.honorflight.org/apply/Veteran-Application-2009-08-20.pdf and send it in. Guardian and volunteer applications are available at www.honorflight.org/docs/Guardian%20Application20Aug09.pdf and www.honorflight.org/docs/VolunteerApplication-11282008.pdf .
The inaugural Honor Flight took place in MAY 05. Six small planes Mail all applications to Honor Flight Inc., 300 East Auburn Ave., Springfield, OH 45505-4703. Guardian flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking twelve World War II veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC. In AUG 05, an ever-expanding waiting list of veterans led to their transition to commercial airline carriers with the goal of accommodating as many veterans as possible. Partnering with HonorAir in Hendersonville, North Carolina, the "Honor Flight Network was formed." In May 08, Southwest Airlines stepped up by donating thousands of free tickets, and was named the official commercial carrier of the Honor Flight Network. In 2009 they transported 35,996 veterans. Today, they are working aggressively to expand the programs to cities in all 50 states. For further information, call 937-521-2400, email at veteran-application@honorflight.org; guardian-application@honorflight.org; volunteer-application@honorflight.org or go to www.honorflight.org. Texas loves their Veterans!!

This is what you call A Thankful State !!!
|
House Bill 3613
was passed into law during the 81st TEXAS Legislative Session
this spring. Now, the procedures for obtaining this entitlement are
now final – Texas veterans that receive 100% disability compensation
from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs are now
eligible for 100% property tax exemption on their residential
homestead property. No other property under your ownership is
eligible for this exemption.
Texas veterans meeting these criteria are now allowed to apply for and receive the 100% exemption on local property tax levied by cities, schools, and counties. On 23 June, appraisal districts across Texas received the long awaited guidance and procedures on the administration process of this exemption for those eligible recipients. This is what is required of the property owner in order to obtain the exemption under this House bill:
Eligible applicants should visit the appraisal district office with their VA Award letter and drivers license/ID to receive assistance in filing for this. Providing the exemption to current residential homestead property will take less than 5 minutes to complete and process. Due to the urgent need to get these approved for applicants, the appraisal district will be processing applications for walk in customers as they arrive until certification of the Appraisal Roll, 15 July. Many of these applicants have mortgages with a property tax escrow. Approval of this 100% exemption could lower their monthly mortgage payments. Naturally, applicants may also apply by mail, and those will be processed as received as with any other application. |

SBP DIC OFFSET UPDATE 22: For a decade, war widows in matching yellow suit jackets and hats quietly and persistently have knocked on Capitol Hill doors seeking an end to the "widows' tax," a government policy that deprives them of benefits from their husbands' military service. They are always warmly received, but that's where the hospitality ends. Despite pledges of help from scores of federal officials — including President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — their long quest remains unfulfilled. Every year since 2005, the Senate has voted to eliminate the policy that denies widows the ability to collect both a military survivor's benefit and the full annuity bought when their military husbands were alive. But in each of those years, the fix was dropped when House and Senate negotiators wrote the final bill in private. "What we always hear is that there is just no funding for us. 'Sorry, this is not your year,'" said Vivianne Wersel, chairwoman of the Government Relations Committee at Gold Star Wives of America. Her husband died of a heart attack in 2005, days after returning from his second tour in Iraq. "What happens behind closed doors, we get thrown under the bus."
The widows' tax is a law that won't allow surviving spouses to receive the retirement pay due them when their spouse died from a cause related to military service, and at the same time collect the full annuity — essentially an insurance policy most of their spouses opted to buy. They paid an average of 6.5% of their retirement pay in premiums, often $100 or more a month. Because one benefit is subtracted from the other, affected surviving spouses lose about $1,000 a month on average. There are about 54,000 survivors who are affected by the policy, whose spouses served in conflicts from World War II to Afghanistan, and that number could grow. The widows say politicians have promised time and time again to help them, but they don't. Part of the problem is the cost. Eliminating the offset in benefits is expensive, said Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), who has been the widows' longtime ally. Making good on the promise would cost $6.7 billion over a decade. But knowing the cost hasn't stopped politicians from promising to help. Pelosi, as House minority leader in 2005, took up the widows' cause as part of the Democrats' GI Bill of Rights, before her party gained control of Congress.
Two years later, Obama, then a senator, co-sponsored legislation to eliminate the offset just before he spoke at a Gold Star Wives reception on Capitol Hill. In his budget proposal to the Congress last week, he didn't include it.
Kimberly Hazelgrove, 36, of Lorton, Va., whose husband died in Iraq in 2004, said she recalls Obama coming to the reception and promising to help them. The 36-year-old mother of two said she's now left wondering what happened to the promise. "I have yet to see it, after a year in office, that really being a priority for them," said Hazelgrove, who has lobbied on Capitol Hill with her kids, ages 6 and 9, in tow. Last June, four military widows showed up before 8 a.m. for a House Armed Services Committee session where their issue was on the agenda. Several hours into the hearing, an aide told them the discussion had been pushed back because of its sensitive nature. At 10:30 p.m., the matter finally came to a vote. By then, Sandra Drew of Herndon, Va., was the only widow still there. Drew, whose husband was killed in Bosnia in 1995, said she was dumbfounded when Democrats who had co-sponsored the legislation in past years voted against it, while Republicans who had once opposed it were supporting it. She said some committee members sheepishly looked at her as they voted down the provision, "visibly uncomfortable that I was in the room. It went right down party lines, and it shouldn't be a partisan issue."
Steve Strobridge, a retired Air Force colonel who is director of government relations at the Military Officers Association of America, said something could be done for the widows if the political will existed. "It requires a vote of the entire Congress or a big emphasis of leadership to say we're going to elevate this priority, and as terrible as it seems, taking care of the widows whose military sponsor was killed by service has not been given a high enough priority," he said. Congress did take the step of recognizing the widows' plight and gave affected survivors $50 more per month starting in 2008. "We've had a partial victory and eventually we will continue to pound away and get it done," Nelson said. Wersel said her group is pleased that so far this year they have enlisted more than 300 co-sponsors for their legislation in the House and more than 50 in the Senate, but they are still not confident that means Congress will pass it. "The whole process has become rhetoric," she said. [Source: AP Kimberly Hefling article 10 Feb 2010 ++]

A GOOD READ FROM THE AMC ON SPACE-A FLYING
Release No. 07-05-09
July 29, 2008New AMC Web site offers space-available travel infoby Mark DiamondAir Mobility Command Public AffairsSCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFRNS) -- Air Mobility Command here recently unveiled its first official, command-level AMC Travel Web site.People planning to travel the AMC military travel system can now point their Web browsers to www.amc.af.mil/amctravel/index.asp for the latest in AMC travel information. The site, which officially went live July 24, offers prospective space-available travelers a wealth of information, including an updated AMC passenger terminal contact list (complete with phone, e-mail and Web links), and more than a dozen travel documents, example letters and brochures.Every day around the world, hundreds of military and military-contracted commercial aircraft travel the world delivering troops and cargo. And each year, hundreds of thousands of military personnel, retirees, and their family members go along for the ride, courtesy of the AMC space-available travel program.Space-available flights, also known as "military hops," are a unique benefit to U.S. servicemembers, retirees and their families. Under the AMC travel program, unused seats on U.S. military and military-contracted aircraft are made available to non-duty passengers on a space-available basis (once space-required or official-duty passengers and cargo have been accommodated).According to one AMC travel expert, the AMC Travel Web site was created simply because "AMC customers deserve it.""(The AMC Travel) site was created to provide our customers a wealth of AMC travel information, which can be counted on to contain the most accurate and up-to-date travel information available," said Tech. Sgt. Steve Katsonis of the AMC passenger policy branch. "Our customers deserved a Web site where they can obtain travel information that is correct, up to date and validated by AMC. This Web site will give them that."Sergeant Katsonis said AMC officials understand the massive amount of anxiety and stress felt by space-required and space-available travelers."Our goal is that this site will answer any questions the passengers will have, therefore minimizing their stress before they leave their homes," he said.In the past, prospective space-available passengers frequently turned to one of several AMC headquarters offices in search of travel information. Sergeant Katsonis said although headquarters personnel are trained to respond to these public queries, he hopes the new Web site will provide all their information and more. Additionally, he said trained passenger service agents at AMC terminals worldwide are standing by to assist. People searching for up-to-the-minute AMC travel information are encouraged to contact their nearest AMC passenger terminal. A current listing is available on the new AMC Travel site.Another benefit of the new AMC Travel site is that it will be updated with the latest breaking news and updates. For instance, Sergeant Katsonis said active-duty dependent travel policies have gone through a few significant changes during the past few years. He said Department of Defense officials now allow unaccompanied travel by dependents when the military spouse is deployed on contingency/exercise/deployment orders, also known as CED orders. According to Sergeant Katsonis, when the deployment is for 120 days or more, unaccompanied travel is authorized in category IV; and for deployments of 366 days or more, unaccompanied travel is authorized in the bottom of category III.Sergeant Katsonis said he wants people to know that space-available travel is a great benefit, but it can be a stressful experience without the proper planning."AMC never guarantees travel, and passengers need to be prepared for their (space-available) trip to take more time than it would were they traveling commercial," the sergeant said.He added that not every base is equipped with facilities or lodging capable of handling passengers stranded by a broken or rerouted aircraft."The most important thing to remember when traveling Space-A is be prepared to fly commercial if problems are encountered" Sergeant Katsonis said. "The key to a stress-free trip is to have a plan. Have enough money for all contingencies, and be mentally prepared for disappointment when plans don't come together." (Courtesy of AMC News Service)
