What are you waiting for?
By: Bob "Irish" Gossard

I sent the following letter to my Congressmen, (both Houses), to insure that each returning Veteran, their Children and Grandchildren, and most importantly the American People I swore to protect, has a say in his or her Government! The thing is this is my opinion on what can be done ... but the truth of the matter is I have thought this out as carefully as I could before I sent this letter off. Complaining gets you no were, but complaining about any issue is a "Godsend" if a proposed solution is added to that complaint! I don't have all the answers, but someone out there may! So ... I put this Question before you -- "What are you waiting for?" Get involved ... the next Generation of Veterans are depending on you!

07 February 2005
I saw the CNN News Broadcast this morning and was appalled at the idea that ... MY Government intends to spend 10 million Dollars; to start the process of changing the minds of the American People, concerning a 50 to 75% Social Security Private Savings Account for those under the age of 55!

What appalls me the most ... is the fact that any 25 year old who may agree with this will be fine ... until they need a down payment for a car, or a house, or to pay the bills required to raise their Children. Some may think it is the same as putting away money for your child's higher education ... But, the truth of the matter is, those who have a high paying job -- 100,000 a year or more -- are the only ones that do so! Unless there is a situation in the family, such as unemployment, or high Medical Costs! Then, that set aside money dwindles away faster then the principle in that Savings Account can keep up with inflation!

Keeping Social Security as it is may not be the solution! But, there are other alternatives ... like ... mandatory employer 50 dollar U.S. Savings Bonds for each employee during his pay period! This can be cost shared at $12.50 each! Do the math after 20 years he has both a Social Security Check and a large lump sum at retirement age!  Plus the money would become an investment in that same Social Security System that pays this retirement, with interest earned from other Government Bonds or Investments! Stipulations could be made that these Bonds will not be cashed until age 65, and only paid out like an annuity fund! It should also, be indicated that these bonds would be transferred from one employer to another!  Now ... what we have here; is a Savings account for each individual ... and ... a constant income for the Government to set aside money for an ... Individual Retirement Fund! ... Call it an "R" Bond to distinguish it from all the other U.S. Savings Bonds! This is just one solution ... I know there are people in our Government who can come up with other solutions!  But! ...This has to be a Partisan Project, with truly honest intentions to insure that all Americans can benefit from this plan!
So ...
May I submit once again that we should wait until a plan with some meat, muscle, blood, and skin and bones is proposed! Then Congress can put forth a beginners Bill, and then make comments on it so if changes need to be made ... it is not too late!  Every point thereafter moves into breathing life into the body of this Bill, starting with agreement, strengthening it with passage, and bringing it to full life upon the signing of the Bill into Law.  It is much easier to make changes before these final three steps; than to correct the flaws after it has passed.

If you doubt me, just look at the unemployable 100% vs. SC 100% fiasco from the unclear language in the NDAA act passed and signed into law just before the election in November.  We all understood it would be for all 100%, but under the much more narrow interpretation over half of the 100% (those that are unemployable and who, because they cannot work need the money as much as the 100% SC) are being denied benefits.  And the promise that it would be worked out upon return last December?  Well, it didn't happen unless they were simply referring to a December without any year attached.  And it does not appear they are moving toward resolution of this matter anytime soon ... if at all.

The other thing that sticks in mine, and many if not all, American's throats ... is the fact that Secretary Rice has stated ... that they ... The Administration ... will grant the Palestinian's 30 million dollars now ...with 320 more millions to come, while the President has indicated that we will cut costs in Children's Education, Environmental Projects, Health Care for the poor, elderly, and Veteran Benefits!

Strange ... if we are in debt up to our eyeballs ... How can we continue to give away money to other Countries that don't even give a damn if we survive! Are we the only Country that has a tax system, and an account for so called Foreign Aid? Are we the only ones that are responsible for Natural Disasters that happen around this World? Where are our ... so Called bought friends ... when 5 Hurricanes devastated our Florida Peninsula! Where were our so called friends when 9-11 happened? The Saudi's offered us 10 million dollars to rebuild New York! ... Yet the UN stated we are sorry and went on about their daily business! Buy the way ... we Pay their bills ... and provide them with Safe sanctuary! Then we had to go into Iraq under false assumptions, with our own Purse Strings open to those people who have the world's energy supply in their mitts, and the money to pay for their own freedom! Yet ... we can't even fully equip our own Soldiers!

I hope to "God" we don't have a bunch of "Yes Men" in Congress ... who are afraid to question and Buck This President and His Administration! I'm talking about Republicans, Democrats, and Independents!

Sincerely,
